## Trigonometry and Calculus

Why do those two words bring fear to the minds of most people?

Have you ever had a trigonometry course or a calculus course? If you were a science or math major in college then you almost certainly have taken those courses! Did you like learning that type of math? Was it fun for you or does it evoke bad memories?

Hopefully if you’ve had those courses, they were fun for you. I was thinking about that as I was reading this article I found below.  It briefly describes the history of trigonometry and calculus. Hope you enjoy it!

Discovering Trigonometry
Trigonometry is a category of mathematics that studies triangles, as well as the spatial relationships between triangle sides and degree angles between these sides. Trigonometry is used to define trigonometric functions.

Trigonometric functions describe the relationships between the angles and sides and are also applied to cyclical phenomena, such as waves.

Trigonometry itself is very similar to geometry, but is slightly more complex. It utilizes functions such as sine, cosine and tangent to analyze areas of angles. These and other functions of trigonometry are used in a variety of career fields including but not limited to: acoustics, architecture, astronomy, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, computer graphics, metrology, medical imaging, music theory and several other fields.

Trigonometry is taught starting in middle and high school. It can be taught as a separate course, but is also taught as a preliminary course for calculus. Trigonometry develops student’s knowledge of both pure and applied mathematics. College level trigonometry is required for several different career majors to help students develop a further understanding of angles and spatial relationships.

Trigonometry was first developed in the 2nd century BC by the Greek mathematician Hipparchus. Hipparchus developed what is known as the first trigonometric table. He used trigonometry, and other mathematical functions, to develop lunar and solar theories. He also used trigonometry to study the motion and orbit of the sun and moon. Though trigonometry was developed by Hipparchus, the study of triangles can be traced all the way back to Egyptian mathematics and Babylonian mathematics.

The Egyptians and Babylonians used trigonometry to develop theorems on ratios of triangle sides. The Babylonian astronomers used early trigonometry to measure the angular distances on the celestial sphere. They used this to detail records of rising and setting stars, planet motions, and solar and lunar eclipses.

During the Hellenistic period, the Greeks took the early Egyptian and Babylonian trigonometry and developed the chord, which developed the use of arcs. A chord of a circle is the geometric line segment whose endpoints are on the circle’s circumference. The chord joins two points on any curve, but it is not limited to an ellipse. The chord that passes through the center point of the circle also functions as the circle’s diameter.

The trigonometry that is currently used today was developed by European mathematicians, Sir Isaac Newton and James Stirling in the 17th century. Newton and Stirling created the general formulas that are currently used to solve trigonometric functions.

Sometimes the key to doing well in learning math is just to stay focused!

In this day and age with so many things calling out for our attention, like cellphones, tablets, televisions, computers and assorted other devices, it’s hard to focus your attention on just one thing. However, the article I’m about to share with you will offer you some tips on staying focused so that you may do better in whatever endeavor your currently involved in. So without further ado here it is:

Stay Focused When Studying With These Tips

Are you like me in that you cannot keep your concentration on the task at hand when it comes to studying your schoolwork? There is no need to panic or beat yourself up because you can’t seem to get the metric table and metric conversion calculator down. There are a number of easy solutions to this problem. You simply need to follow a routine when tackling concentrations difficulties.

I know it’s an uneasy feeling. No one likes to be in a situation where we are forced to focus with so many other things going on around us. While it may seem as pretty frightening at first, it’s really not that difficult to change your outlook and become a more focused student. Here are a few simple methods to follow and improve your study concentration for that next metric conversion and metric calculator test:

The first thing I want you to do is take out a piece of paper and make a list of ten points on why you should concentrate more. For example, studying for a good grade in math and knowing metric conversion would be a good reason. If your list has a lot of valid and strong reasons for staying focused, you’ll most likely stay that way. Categorize your reasons and thoughts in two areas – pros and cons. On one side of the list, write down all the positive things that can happen if you concentrate on your studies. Get rid of any and all possible distractions. These would be your TV, iPod, cellphone, computer or anything else that can potentially grab your much needed attention away from your metric table studies. In general, my advice is do your best and study smartly as much as you can. Avoid studying when you are hungry, and always think about what failure would mean to you. I like to form a visual image in my mind of what an “F” would mean to my future in college and when looking for a job.

Three Easy Ways To Help With Elementary Math

Are you worried about giving adequate help with elementary math to your child? Has your child ever brought home math homework and you have no idea how to assist them? Students no longer learn math the way you and I learned math. They are now exploring, drawing, and developing their own strategies to solve a problem. This leaves many parents in the dark about how to help their child in math. In addition, some people just are not “math people” and therefore feel like they don’t know how to help their child. I am going to give you three easy ways to help with elementary math from home.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #1- One of the easiest ways for a child to learn math concepts is to use manipulatives. Manipulatives are items that your child can move around, group, take away from, add to, etc. These can be anything you have in your house (beans, skittles, grapes, etc.).Manipulatives help children who are struggling in math because they help to bring the problem to life. Your child will now be able to “act out” the story problem, which helps them better understand what they are supposed to do in order to work out the problem or equation.

When children use manipulatives they show the word problem using the manipulatives. For instance, if a child was dividing 72 by 9, he or she would count out 72 beans and then group them into groups of 9. He or she would then count how many groups they have to find their answer. To extend this activity, students can label what they are doing so they can connect the manipulatives with drawings or numbers.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #2- If you don’t have manipulatives at home or if they are completing their work in the car, before baseball practice, or anywhere that manipulatives are not available your child can draw pictures. It might seem too simple to be true, but I have had many experiences where a child was stuck on a problem until they drew a picture and visually saw the problem instead of simply reading it. Drawing pictures of the word problem or equation helps a child see exactly what they are going to do in the problem. They are also able to manipulate the items they are working with, which makes it more fun and meaningful to them.

Drawings work a lot like manipulatives, but students are now strictly using paper and pencil and drawings instead of physically manipulating items. To make this activity more meaningful, your child should label their drawing with numbers, skip counting, or however they are counting the objects in their picture. I always tell my students that anyone should be able to fully understand what they are doing just by looking at their work.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #3- When your child is stuck on a problem try making the numbers smaller. In many cases, children are overwhelmed with big numbers. They see large numbers and automatically think the problem is going to be difficult. Making the numbers smaller doesn’t change the concept, it just makes it easier for them to work through the problem and it gives them confidence that they can complete the problem. Once they can successfully answer the problem with smaller numbers have them try using the bigger numbers. Just remind them to do the same thing with the bigger numbers that they did with the smaller numbers.

Math is a difficult subject for many children. A lot of times they come home and you just don’t know how to help them. Some of the best ways you can help your child succeed in math is to let them use manipulatives, have them draw pictures, and to change the numbers in the problem. They can use one or all of these strategies on the same problem. Utilizing these three easy tips with your child will help with elementary math skills and get them started on the path towards excellence in math.

Making Math Fun For Kids

As adults, we use math for everything. Buying gas, figuring out a budget, cooking, painting a room. In pretty much everything we do, we use some form of math.

As children, math can be simple and come easy or it can be extremely frustrating. Therefore, start young and make math fun and a part of their everyday life. When children see math as useful knowledge, they will be more likely to embrace the challenges as the situations arise.

Math is all around your house. It is in the everyday duties you perform and also in the creative activities you offer your family. You can easily make math an everyday activity for your children without any additional requirements of you, or, you can get creative. Either way, you can make math fun for your kids.

Many websites offer printable math activities. Used as a quiet time activity, children enjoy sitting down and tracing, counting, seeking or analyzing the colorful worksheets offered. These worksheets are designed to make math fun for kids. Why re-invent the wheel?

If you are in the mood to be creative, your options are limitless but truly, very little prep time is needed. Depending of course on the age of your child, some easy math games for kids are:

• Give your child cotton balls. Offer them a plastic jar to fill up. Once it is full, everyone can guess how many are in the jar. Your child can dump them out, count them and see who was closest.
• Set your child on a washable floor. With a pan of water, a big spoon and a jar, let them fill it up, counting the spoonfuls as they go.
• Save sheets of paper that you intend to recycle. Let your child wad it up and throw it in recycle bin. If they hit the target, they get 3 points. If they miss, take away 2 points.
• Have they earned a treat? Who can get the most bites out of the treat?

When you are overburdened with your workload, triple dip! Do your work, get help from the kids and make math games for kids to play.

• Do you need to cook or bake something? Show your child how to do the measuring.
• In need of a simple home repair? Ask your child to get you what you need and how many you need.
• Vacuuming? Ask your child to count how many swipes it takes to get all the way across the room. They can either watch you or do the vacuuming themselves.
• Time to pick up clutter? How many things are misplaced? The person who finds the most gets to get out of doing dishes.

There are so many math games for kids. Some may require you to search for them on the internet, others may just be a necessity to help getting a job done and others can simply be creative and fun. With any case, you have helped create games for kids to play while they learned.

Most of the time when you ask a child about learning math, they’ll usually respond that it’s hard. Some respond that they’re just not good at math. Math can be a difficult subject for many children, and often, children struggle in school simply because they do not understand the basic concepts of mathematics. If your child is struggling with this subject, and you want some suggestions for help on math, then you have come to the right place. If you take a proactive approach to your child’s learning needs, you can make math much easier for them. Just consider the following suggestions.

First, remember that school subjects are often considered not fun or even boring. Your child may be struggling with math simply because he or she feels like being in math class is torment. To get your child more interested in the subjects, look for ways to make it fun. Create math based games that will be exciting learning experiences. This is a good way to keep a child’s attention and help them learn without them feeling the normally drudgery of study.

Second, math can easily be taught in everyday situations. You do not have to sit down with a child at a kitchen table to study the subject. When your child needs help on math, look for real life scenarios to help them learn. For example, take them along to the grocery store and let them use a notepad to add up the cost of different grocery items that you are buying. When you purchase something at a convenience store, have the child try to determine how much change you got back from your cash payment. There are many real life scenarios that can easily implement help on math for your child.

Third, remember that illustrating something or making it hands on is a much easier way for children to learn. If you put a math problem on paper, the child may struggle. However, if you make it come to life, they may find it easier to learn. For instance, on a basic level, have the child add or subtract actual items like fruit in the kitchen, books or videos in the living room, or pebbles in the back yard. Bringing math to life gives a better illustration for a child to learn.

Many children struggle with math. If your child needs help on math, remember that you can give them that help. Just keep in mind that you need to make the subject more fun and interesting. You also need to use real life scenarios and illustrations to teach them the subject.

Modifying games is simple and affordable for all parents. All it requires is a little time on your part. Create a shoe box full of homemade math games that your child can pick from on a daily basis. Spend at least 15 minutes a day practicing through these fun techniques and your child will be more confident in math in addition to being able to pass those timed tests.

## Preparing For The Math Final Exam

At this time of the year a student should be getting ready for their final exams. Hopefully your student won’t be dreading their math final! With that thought in mind, I was reading an article on helping your child or student to prepare for their tests. It’s a pretty good article so I thought I’d share it with you. So here it is:

Math Anxiety: Overcoming Test Fear

In previous articles in this series, I have discussed the math myths our society has extended, and how these misconceptions affect how kids approach the learning challenges in math class. Also, overcoming this anxiety when completing assignments at home is essential in coping with the emotional block of thinking the student “can’t get it” and will “never get it”.

It has been said before that to truly conquer your fear, you must put a name to it and understand it. On many levels, the anxiety that students feel walking in to a math test situation becomes irrational. The honest concerns they may have had about the classroom material that will show up on the test get blown up to major emotional blocks that understandably affect their performance. To ease the intensity of this perception, it is essential to really understand what has led up this point. With the help of parents, classroom teacher, online tutor (any patient listener will do!), students must think about when this problem started. What has happened in the past to form the belief that the fear is insurmountable, unsolvable? What have the true results been on past tests, in other curriculum areas? What steps has the student taken to deal with the problem?

As mentioned in the other parts to this article series, contributing factors are the myths and misconceptions people have about math in general. This is a cultural, societal bias that seems to be more prevalent in math than in other areas of study. Unfortunately, students grow up immersed in this unfriendly environment and start to believe the math myths. Again, with help from a sympathetic listener, students over time should come to realize that fear about math class and math tests are irrational. Concern and nervousness about an upcoming test is normal and can be dealt with. Keeping the anxiety level at a controllable level is the first step to being ready for their upcoming exam.

The next building block to overcoming test anxiety in math class is to be prepared. Of course, this is common sense advice, but it gets forgotten if the student has elevated this concern from a “I’m not ready” level to a “I can’t do it” or “I’ll never get it” level.

In the second article of this series I discussed how to deal with homework issues. If students have improved their use of homework time and maintained higher quality standards for their assignments, they will be better prepared for tests. If they have not been doing their homework because of “math avoidance”, test environments will continue to be a huge challenge.
Given that students are able to dissipate the stress level by understanding their fear, and they have put in the effort on homework, now what can they do on test day? Using smart test-taking strategies is the final piece of the puzzle.

To be a more effective test-taker, students must be able to use the time given effectively. Looking at the clock and worrying about the time will just add to the anxiety level. Here are some suggestions:

1. Take the time to look over the entire test in the first 5 minutes to get a sense of what concepts are covered and what format the test uses.
2. Mark up the easiest problems and the hardest problems.
3. Do the easiest problems first in order to gain confidence.
4. Get to the average level problems next, keeping in mind to move on if feeling stuck.
5. Save the hardest ones for last.
6. Finally, try the ones you skipped. Use smart guessing strategies only as a last resort. Proofread for small mistakes.
7. Feel proud that you did your best!

Students need to be physically prepared to sit down at a test and do their best. Drink adequate water the day before, and bring a water bottle at the test site to stay properly hydrated. The day before the test and the morning of test day, students should have eaten nutritious, high energy foods without too much sugar and salt. (Potato chips and corn chips, high sugar and caffeine drinks are never a good idea!) The student should have had plenty of sleep the night before, also.

As students get ready leading up to the test, they must find out what other resources they are allowed during the test. Will the teacher allow notebooks, note cards, past assignments, or study sheets or problem examples? If so, get them organized and ready; reread or rewrite them as necessary. Work with other students in study groups, or use an online tutor and discuss examples similar to the ones you think will be on the test. This preparation time and effort will pay off!

Math fear is a common experience for all of us. What is not common, however, is letting it handcuff us to the point of freezing up and blocking our ability to solve the problem for ourselves. Suffering in isolation is not the answer; avoiding the subject cannot work; not seeking help won’t get rid of the problem, either. By discussing with others who can listen, students can eventually understand that math anxiety is common and solvable. Using intelligent strategies when doing homework, and putting in the effort to prepare for tests will result in increased self-confidence and overcoming the fear of math.

As adults, we look for ways to simplify our learning processes. For us, the simpler it is, the faster we can assimilate it! So it only makes sense that this process would work for children as well, right? Knowing that our children like toys, it only makes sense that if we can find toys that will help our child learn something easily, we should implement them into our child’s playtime!

Math Toys Help To Improve Counting Ability

Pre-school children needs to learn simple mathematics and most often the onus falls on parents to begin the procedure. It is here that many parents fail because they don’t know where to start from or how to make counting interesting and interactive for their children. Nowadays however there is help at hand since there are lots of creative teaching tools that are available in the market. One of the most interactive approaches that can help your kid learn simple mathematics is math toys. Starting from simple addition to subtraction these toys enable your child to learn counting effectively. The great thing about these toys is it encourages the child to play a game of numbers. The Importance Of Memorising Multiplication Tables

Learning multiplication tables is an inevitable step into the world of maths. Children begin learning their times tables in 2nd and 3rd grade. Often, some children will have a natural flare for learning their multiplication tables while others might find it difficult.

Bearing this in mind, we can confidently conclude that the times tables are essential to learning. Without them a child’s confidence and capability will be lost.

The important of times tables must also be taken in its broader context to fully appreciate how necessary it is. It is not exclusive to schools or learning environments, but also in our everyday lives! We often use multiplication for something as simple as calculating prices in the shops, planning parties and in domestic activities such as cooking, calculating bills etc.

All of these necessary and everyday tasks are made easier and achieved faster when one knows their times tables.Now, while these are valid points to any adult, it’s another thing trying to encourage a child who is struggling with their times tables.

It’s important to note that in some situations a child’s struggle can be chalked up to a learning difficulty – especially if they are receiving consistent help from parents and teachers. If this is the case then a child will need to be given alternative methods for learning their multiplication tables.

A child must always be supported and encouraged.It is vital that parents do NOT reprimand or criticize their children. The child is struggling enough as it is! Negative emotions and pressure will sabotage a child’s learning capability – in some cases it is severe enough to completely prevent the learning of new information.

Multiplication tables can be learned in a variety of new and innovative methods. These new learning styles allow for a child to find the best method to suit the way they process information.

Some of these new methods include taking a more visual approach to learning. Games, flash cards, interactive software, the use of animals and cartoon characters to encourage children. An almost holistic approach to maths that makes facts FUN to learn.

When the method of learning these multiplication facts is made engaging and entertaining for children, then they are far more likely to retain the information learned. Memorising the multiplication tables through these new methods makes a necessary and educational experience both fun and MEMORABLE!
