Make It Easy For Your Child To Learn Math

You can help your child learn math and even make it easier for them if you use the right tools.

The article below will give you some suggestions on how to do this. Check it out and see if it helps you with your child.

Math is a very important subject for everyone to master. Mathematics is used in every area of life – in the home, on the job, and even in recreation.

The problem is that some people just don’t understand the concepts. This can be caused by different factors. Sometimes a child in school does not grasp the basic functions because of attention or classroom problems. This causes them to experience problems as each year new and more advanced tasks are added to their work.

Another thing that causes problems in math is that some people just aren’t as good at it as others. But for your child’s sake, you should take every measure you can find to improve their math skills. It will help them in the future to be able to function on the job and in the home.

Make Math Enjoyable

Math is learned through repetition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun doing it. You can help your child become better at math by spending a few minutes a day working with them. Spending time with your child can strengthen your relationship and give you quality time together as well as help them academically.

There are software programs for the child to use themselves or worksheets to use for one-on-one tutoring. You can find programs that help tutor in the basics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

After the basic functions have been mastered, you can find programs to help with more advanced operations. These topics would include decimals, fractions, percents, ratio, rounding, prime numbers, geometry and more. With exercises, tips and strategies, your child’s confidence and performance will grow.

Use a Variety of Math Exercises

Some tuition programs include math quizzes, puzzles, and challenges to develop mental sharpness. Presenting math topics in challenging and creative ways makes it more interesting and helps the child not to be discouraged.

You can enrich your child’s learning and help him advance at his own pace so he masters each subject. There are courses offered online that will grade and give advice as your child works through their program. You will find software programs set up as games that guide a child through different mathematical tasks. There are online sites that teach math through sports and other subjects that are interesting to children and teens.

Begin Working Now

Before you decide what software or worksheets to order, you can have your child take an online evaluation test. This will show you what their weaknesses and strengths are in math. Then you will know what areas to concentrate on to effectively improve their math skills.

Don’t delay in helping your children learn math. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for them to catch up on what they missed. Have a positive attitude and patience to help them enjoy their math work. Find a good program that is tailored to their needs. Then be consistent in working with them or encouraging them to work. You will be pleased at the good results, and your child will reap the benefits from your help for the rest of their life.

Learn Math To Help With Your Future

I was reading through a forum and one of the members posted this:

Will I Make It In Game Dev?

guys, I’m an computer science engineer and I love to get into game development…i just enjoy the whole concept and its always held my interest..Im good at programming
BUT! my whole life ive never ever been good at math…it just doesnt interest me and i never bothered to study it….only a couple of times when my passing the year had depended on it had i given it a look and scored good marks else id alwys manage with the least possible marks to make it thru the year in math…
Now, I know that game programming involves a lot of complex math..do you think its a good choice for me ? I’m willing to learn math if its for game programming but realistically speaking…im 21 and almost zero at math except for the basic stuff….do you think ill be able to catch up in time to be any good at it ? or should I just forget this career?

This made me stop and realize that quite often what we take for granted is actually preparing us for a possible carreer choice at a later point in our life!

So what if this person’s parents had encouraged them to study math more, or what if they’d gotten him a math tutor? Chances are he wouldn’t have had to ask this question in this forum at all!

So if you are a parent and you’re reading this, encourage your child and remember that what you help your child learn now will stay with them for the rest of their lives!

Oh and if you’re interested in seeing the responses that this gentleman got in answer to his post, you can check it out here:

Mental Math – Tricks or Real Help

Mental Math  – is it a trick or can it truly help your child to learn math?

I found this article from article dashboard and wanted to share it with you. It discusses 2 methods that are currently being used in Asia.

Mental Math Methods From Asia

First of all, let us figure out what exactly is mental math. Today if you search the phrase “mental math” you will probably end up with millions of options. Not exactly that makes your life easy; instead it builds up and strengthens your curiosity. Put in simplest terms, mental math can be defined as calculations performed in your head – mentally – without help of any external device be it as simple as pen and paper or any modern day device such as calculator, computer or any other electronic gadget.

We humans perform mental mathematical calculations everyday, consciously and unconsciously. When you are driving you figure out when to apply brakes to bring the vehicle to stop before hitting something. You figure out time difference between east coast and west coast. But where we falter is at the simplest and most mundane of calculations. Go to a restaurant and figure out 18% gratuity.

Abacus Mental Mathematics

What is abacus mental mathematics? Origin of Abacus is highly disputed today, some say it originated in Mesopotamia and some claim to be in China. Over centuries, abacus has evolved in to various different forms and sizes. The most commonly used is the Japanese Soroban Abacus.

The Soroban Abacus consists of one upper row and four lower rows and columns vary from thirteen, fifteen, seventeen or twenty one. It is claimed and proven by many researchers in Asia that Abacus stimulates whole brain development. When children use both hands to move the abacus beads to perform arithmetic calculations, there is quick communication between the hands and the brain that stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This promotes rapid, balanced whole brain development.

If a child starts learning the abacus before being taught traditional arithmetic, there is minimal conflict and the child will easily work within both systems. If a child starts the program later, having already received traditional foundations, there may be a slightly extended learning period for the child to accept and integrate the abacus method.

Vedic Mental Mathematics

What is Vedic mental mathematics? Origin of Vedic Mathematics is in Atharva Veda (Holy Scripture from Hinduism). Vedic mathematics is a system based on sixteen sutras (aphorisms) which are actually word-formulae describing natural ways of solving a whole range of mathematical problems. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution.

It is claimed and proven by many researchers in Asia that practice and use of Vedic mathematics helps the person in many different aspects of decision making. From intelligent guessing to thinking outside the box ability. Vedic mathematics has its applications to much advanced mathematics, such as calculus and linear algebra. The sixteen sutras are: By one more than the one before, All from 9 and the last from 10, Vertically and crosswise, Transpose and apply, If the Samuccaya is the same it is zero, If one is in ratio the other is zero, By addition and by subtraction, By the completion or non-completion, Differential calculus, By the deficiency, Specific and general, The remainders by the last digit, The ultimate and twice the penultimate, By one less than the one before, The product of the sum, and All the multipliers

Today, both these methods have made a come back in Asia. Abacus Mental Math method is extremely popular in nations of China, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Korea and India whereas Vedic Mental Math method is extremely popular only in India.

Can A Math Tutor Help?

As you probably already know, we here at Mathnasium of Cherry Hill provide a math tutoring service to help your child do better in their math classes. But quite often people will question as to whether a math tutor truly helps a child with their learning math.

So I’ve decided to share someone else’s article to give you a different perspective on the benefits of a math tutor!

Hope you enjoy it!

Math Tutor– Hit A Home Run On Your Next Report Card

Jackie was a kid that excelled in just about everything. And, from the beginning of her school career no one would have ever suspected that she would need a math tutor. Why she was great at everything from spelling and reading to her favorite sport, softball; she was a super star. Excellent report cards and perfect grade point averages were all commonplace for Jackie as she made her way through elementary and middle school. Jackie always had a knack for picking up any subject with ease. Being a quick study throughout those younger years gave her great confidence to try just about anything. And when a subject gave her a bit of difficulty, Jackie just devoted more time and effort into her study.

But, as time when on the subjects became more challenging for her. The concepts became increasingly more complex and the curriculum much more rigorous, especially mathematics. And, most specifically trigonometry. When Jackie began high school her trouble with these sophisticated math concepts left her in the batter’ s box. This sudden trouble with mathematics threw with Jackie a curve ball. And, no amount of study could help her swing it. From the trigonometry ratios, to trigonometry equations to trigonometry intervals, Jackie was beginning to think she was going to strike out before the first trimester was up.

But, Jackie’s parents still knew that she could make the grade. However, they did not feel that they could explain any of these concepts to her as they themselves had no understanding of them. But, they would do anything for their little girl. And so, since they noticed how much she was studying without making any headway on her own, they were starting to become concerned about how much time she was spending on trigonometry. So, they started looking for a math tutor to help her through these difficult concepts.

Jackie and her new math tutor met after school twice a week for two hours each session. And, like most math tutors, Jackie’s was college mathematics major with a great knowledge and understanding of all mathematics concepts. After a few weeks of meeting Jackie began to understand some of the concepts that were alluding her. Soon, she began to understand all the functions of trigonometry. And, after one trimester, her trigonometry grade went from a low C- to a promising B+. Of course, being the over achiever that she is, Jackie wanted to make a triple play in the form of an A+, but she was willing to keep working with her math tutor to make that happen. And, by the end of the year Jackie had all her bases covered and was doing so well that she was ready for calculus.

Does A Math Tutor Really Help?

In order to help some students learn math more easily, it’s a good idea to hire a math tutor. Here’s a nice article which explains why a student might need a math tutor and the benefits of having one.

When And How A Math Tutor Can Really Make A Difference

If you’re having trouble understanding pre-algebra, calculus, or anything in between, you could greatly benefit from a math tutor. For those who need to study up for a high school exam, the GRE, or just a simple college course quiz, a math tutor can substantially increase your leverage in understanding the logic behind an array of problems. There are tons of live, online tutors that are available for immediate pay. Others might be available in your local community or even University or school. Many who freelance offer their services online who will charge per-hour for various forms of assistance.

Those who advertise their services online can help you with immediate assistance if they charge for an instant chat program or Skype call, for example. For less immediate needs, some may simply ask for an email to be sent once a payment via PayPal is sent. Others will grant you access to message boards that operate round the clock so that you can ask a multitude of users available for questions. This may be one route to take, but there are also many free website s and message boards that you can visit, though answers to your questions and math problems may not be as speedy or even correct.

A math tutor may be accessible directly from your high school, college, university, or other educational institution. Asking the administration of your school or learning facility is the best to go about finding out if there are available resources for your math needs. On large university campuses, many bulletin boards dawn print out ads from students who specialize in various subject areas. If you can find one of these and do a quick search, perhaps finding a fellow student for help may be the best bet. Prices are likely to be low and you would be helping a statistically poor college student!

Because your educational career is of the utmost importance, finding math help is essential. This will help you gain leverage in future courses while helping pass the ones that are required. It may also come in handy once graduated, as extensive tutoring can truly open the eyes of those seeking help, revealing to them a new perspective on the subjects at hand. If you need some numerical assistance, you can easily find some help with a little research and perseverance.

Your education is nothing to toy around with, so it is important to not be afraid to seek and ask for help. This is particularly true with math, the #1 ranked response by college level students as the most difficult subjects to grasp both in high school and undergraduate. No matter which grade or educational level you may be at, if you need math assistance, it is important to seek this help out. With the right help, these problems can cease to exist, making your future endeavors stress free and easier to grasp.

How To Help Your Child Learn Math

If you’re not real sure of how to go about helping your child learn elementary math, here’s a good article I found that I’d like to share with you!

Three Easy Ways To Help With Elementary Math

Are you worried about giving adequate help with elementary math to your child? Has your child ever brought home math homework and you have no idea how to assist them? Students no longer learn math the way you and I learned math. They are now exploring, drawing, and developing their own strategies to solve a problem. This leaves many parents in the dark about how to help their child in math. In addition, some people just are not “math people” and therefore feel like they don’t know how to help their child. I am going to give you three easy ways to help with elementary math from home.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #1- One of the easiest ways for a child to learn math concepts is to use manipulatives. Manipulatives are items that your child can move around, group, take away from, add to, etc. These can be anything you have in your house (beans, skittles, grapes, etc.).Manipulatives help children who are struggling in math because they help to bring the problem to life. Your child will now be able to “act out” the story problem, which helps them better understand what they are supposed to do in order to work out the problem or equation.

When children use manipulatives they show the word problem using the manipulatives. For instance, if a child was dividing 72 by 9, he or she would count out 72 beans and then group them into groups of 9. He or she would then count how many groups they have to find their answer. To extend this activity, students can label what they are doing so they can connect the manipulatives with drawings or numbers.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #2- If you don’t have manipulatives at home or if they are completing their work in the car, before baseball practice, or anywhere that manipulatives are not available your child can draw pictures. It might seem too simple to be true, but I have had many experiences where a child was stuck on a problem until they drew a picture and visually saw the problem instead of simply reading it. Drawing pictures of the word problem or equation helps a child see exactly what they are going to do in the problem. They are also able to manipulate the items they are working with, which makes it more fun and meaningful to them.

Drawings work a lot like manipulatives, but students are now strictly using paper and pencil and drawings instead of physically manipulating items. To make this activity more meaningful, your child should label their drawing with numbers, skip counting, or however they are counting the objects in their picture. I always tell my students that anyone should be able to fully understand what they are doing just by looking at their work.

Help with Elementary Math Tip #3- When your child is stuck on a problem try making the numbers smaller. In many cases, children are overwhelmed with big numbers. They see large numbers and automatically think the problem is going to be difficult. Making the numbers smaller doesn’t change the concept, it just makes it easier for them to work through the problem and it gives them confidence that they can complete the problem. Once they can successfully answer the problem with smaller numbers have them try using the bigger numbers. Just remind them to do the same thing with the bigger numbers that they did with the smaller numbers.

Math is a difficult subject for many children. A lot of times they come home and you just don’t know how to help them. Some of the best ways you can help your child succeed in math is to let them use manipulatives, have them draw pictures, and to change the numbers in the problem. They can use one or all of these strategies on the same problem. Utilizing these three easy tips with your child will help with elementary math skills and get them started on the path towards excellence in math.

Summer Math Help

Quite often students will forget some of what they’ve learned throughout the school year during their summer vacation months. In order to ensure that your child will retain most of what he’s learned, there are summer programs which you might want to explore. This article offers you some ideas along that theme:

Advantages Of Learning Through The Summer Months

While children learn plenty of information throughout the school year, some of that can be lost during the summer. In addition to that issue, often called “summer brain drain,” there are a variety of other reasons for parents to consider an online summer learning program. In fact, there are many advantages of learning through the summer months.

Prevent Loss of Learning
Facts oftentimes are not being practiced enough during summer vacation. Learning through the summer months can help avoid a loss of learning that occurs due to non-practice. Oftentimes teachers spend a good portion of the beginning of the school year reviewing what was learned in the previous year. Summer learning programs can make this process and transition much smoother for a child.

Catch Up on Missed Skills
Sometimes a child can get behind and even miss some of the important basic skills. This is especially true in mathematics. Because previous math skills are required to learn and process upcoming math, it’s important that a child fully comprehend each math process. Knowing and understanding all required concepts will help a child succeed in future lessons. A summer math program can help a child catch up on these essential skills.

Review Learned Skills
If a child has already mastered the required skills for his or her grade level, summer learning programs can prepare that child for the next grade level. Learning about some of the things to come can give a child a head start and smooth the transition to the next grade level. Math can be especially difficult for some children to grasp. For more convenience and flexibility, try an online summer math program.

Master Learned Skills
Even if a child has learned the basic required skills in the appropriate level during the school year, summer learning can still be beneficial. Further practice of those skills can help ensure or achieve mastery. Mastering basic and advanced summer math skills can help a child to achieve in upcoming study during the school year. To advance further in math, mastery of each skill is required. That is because as math progresses, those skills will be used to solve more complex math problems. Practicing learned facts through the summer months can help a child master those required skills.

Get a Head Start on the Upcoming School Year
Even a child who has already mastered his or her required skills can still benefit from a summer learning program. A child can get a head start on lessons to come in the upcoming school year by learning some of them through summer education. This can either help the child to advance further in studies or provide a smooth transition when advancing to the next grade level. Online summer learning programs are a great way to do this. Some are even designed around this purpose.

Math And Educational Toys – Help For Learning Math

Here’s another article I was reading and found interesting. Thought you all might like to read it as well! It stays on our recent theme of making math more fun.

How You Can Help Your Child To Learn Math Toys And Other Educational Toys

Counting is an essential part of learning for kids. However it is necessary to make counting for kids interesting so that they like it instead of getting bored. It is an activity that enhances numerical expertise from a very early age. Later on it helps them to tackle complex mathematical problems with ease. There are lots of educational toys meant for children which are designed to hone their different skills. These toys make learning fun and exciting. To help improve counting abilities of children there are math toys which are available in different varieties. Visual and moving elements are incorporated into these toys to make them realistic. Your child will love these toys.

It is imperative that you provide your child a conductive learning environment. Learning requires stimulation and this must be done from a very tender age. Thankfully nowadays you have so many educational toys that can help in the learning process. The beginning part can be difficult for you like choosing the right toy. However you can make this easy by choosing a simple toy and as your child progresses you can bring in complex toys. When you buy math toys for your child keep in mind your child’s interest. Get something which your child would love to play with.

Mathematical learning toys for children should be such that it helps your child become familiar with numbers. Encourage your child to play with the toys and if necessary participate with your child. Gradually as your child progresses bring in toys with maths concepts. Your child will learn basic concepts of arithmetic like addition, sorting, counting etc. When you buy toys always keep in mind your child’s level of ability and the quality of the toy.

There are other learning toys too which help children to understand their daily lessons better. Starting from little toys meant for infants there are different types of toys that cater to children up to their teenage years. Some toys are so challenging that even parents get stumped sometimes. Toys not only entertain kids, but also stimulate their minds. This aids in their development.

If your child has a penchant for music, give him or her toys that play classical music. This will help enhance the imagination of your child. For kindergarten children interactive toys are highly recommended. These help them learn words as well as numbers. There are so many educational toys and each comes with a purpose. Children love toys, so give them toys that make them enjoy as well as learn.
